…and Don Miguel Ruiz. I’ve now been living my life for many years by following Ruiz’s Four Agreements. First published in 1997, this book helped me to reinforce the logic and way of thinking I’d been developing through my own maturity and put it into four simple concepts that I could follow for life.

Agreement 1
Be impeccable with your word – Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Agreement 2
Don’t take anything personally – Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

Agreement 3
Don’t make assumptions – Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Agreement 4
Always do your best – Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

And another person who appears to live his life according to the same or similar philosophy is Tim Minchin. Today I discovered his newly animated beat-poem called Storm. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Absolutely love Tim Minchin. Watched his show at the Opera House last month. He is so talented and it’s great to see “Storm” animated. As for Don Miguel Ruiz, I had never heard of him, so thanks for pointing him out to me. I just ordered his book from Book Depository ($16 delivered for the hardback). The reviews at Amazon were excellent too. I look forward to getting it.

Stu, You have proved time and time again that you live your life with high ideals and values. You have ensured that your life and what you have provided for others in that life, are things that “make a difference”to others. . I admire you and what you stand for. My life(and many others)is so much richer and happier because of what I have learned from you, year after year. Thank you for continuing to help me grow as a person (who has much to learn) by providing thought provoking material.

Very kind words Audrey. Thanks for all you’ve done with your sharing and caring.

Hello Stu. I think for me ‘storm’ wasn’t using the Fifth Agreement which leads to Respect for others creations or (agreements). Respect means not trying to claim knowledge as your own.

Hi Collette. I assume you mean Tim Minchin wasn’t respecting others’ knowledge in his response to the person “Storm”. That could be, but he was relating a story from a dinner party. I think your Fifth Agreement is worthwhile. 🙂

Colette - 10 April, 2011

No I mean she was trying to force her viewpoint, her ‘knowledge’. I think Don Miguel’s message is that it’s different for everyone – knowledge i.e. I went and watched him on youtube after seeing your post. It was very healing.

Hi, Stu.

Tim Minchin says in a response to one of Storm’s arguments, “Science adjusts it views based on what’s observed.”, but science can’t have a view. It’s a tool, not a being. People have views, and people believe to be true what they prefer to be true.
